An increasing number of holidaymakers have been travelling to the US to discover the delights of places like Florida and Virginia, it has been revealed.

According to statistics from the US department of commerce, a record number of international visitors - including many Britons - headed to the States in 2007.

In total, the country saw 56.7 million international arrivals, an 11 per cent rise on the number of visitors in 2006.

The department notes that this beats the record level of tourists the US attracted in 2000 of 51.2 million visitors.

Meanwhile, visitors in 2007 spent a total $122.7 billion on both travel to the country and tourism-related activities within its borders - a "record-breaking" figure.

This figure represents an increase of roughly 14 per cent on the total spent in 2006.

Florida, in the south-east of the US, is known as the Sunshine State which is reflective of its tropical climate.
