The cost of eating out and shopping is still much cheaper than in the UK, even with an unfavourable exchange rate, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).

"Over the summer business to America was very good. Traditionally speaking, in terms of exchange rate issues, America is regarded as a fairly good value country for people from the UK. It is still a lot cheaper," Abta spokesman Sean Tipton commented.

He added that the US still represented better value that European destinations such as Norway, Sweden and Finland.
