2008 News Archive - Holidays - US still pulls in the tourists

06 02 2009

Tourists still flocked to the US last year, despite the onset of the global economic downturn.

Figures released today by the US Office of Travel and Tourism Industries (OTTI) revealed that visitor numbers grew by six per cent in the first ten months of last year compared to the same period in 2007.

According to the OTTI, 47 million people visited the US in the first ten months of last year, as many found the pull of popular holiday destinations like Florida and Virginia impossible to resist.

The election of Barack Obama as president may well ensure that tourists continue to travel to the US this year, despite the credit crunch.

According to the 2009 Travel Trends report, published by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, young people in particular say they are more likely to travel to the US this year than previously.
