2008 News Archive - Holidays - USA 'popular for Christmas shopping'

17 12 2007

A significant number of Britons look set to travel to the USA in order to complete their festive shopping this Christmas, according to one commentator.

Abbey reports that according to research from Carter Allen bank, out of the 2.2 million UK consumers likely to travel abroad to do their seasonal shopping, 882,000 people will be doing so in New York.

The company notes that many Brits will travel there in order to take advantage of the weak dollar and strong pound.

"Clearly the strong pound is having a real impact on shoppers and many are heading abroad to find a bargain this Christmas and take advantage of the favourable exchange rate with the US dollar in particular," commented Sally Ann Watts head of marketing at Cater Allen.

These two million shoppers are expected to spend the equivalent of £263 million on purchases overseas this winter.

The Association of British Travel Agents recently reported that Spain would also be popular for Brits travelling over the Christmas period.
