06 06 2007

Among Crete's many attractions are long, white sandy beaches, clear blue water and amazing cuisine.

However, the island also boasts the archaeological site of the Palace of Knossos, a must-see for any historical buff.

Excavated in the early 20th century, the Palace of Knossos is from Europe's most ancient civilization, the Minoans, and is the setting for the famous story of the minotaur.

The site covers 20,000 square meters and consists of the palace itself, the Minoan houses, a villa, multiple temples and even some ancient Roman mosaics.

In its original incarnation, the Palace of Knossos was said to have over 1,500 rooms.

Crete has become one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations, due to it beautiful physical characteristics and temperate weather.

The biggest city on Crete, Heraklion, is a bustling metropolis whose vibrancy rivals any of the major cities in Europe.

Crete has a superbly sophisticated infrastructure that caters to all types of tourists.
