2008 News Archive - Holidays - West Virginia offers Presidential Trail

17 12 2008

Brits who found themselves inspired by the election of Barack Obama to the White House may want to consider taking a trip to West Virginia this winter, where they can follow a tourist trail inspired by another revolutionary president.

George Washington, the first president of the US, set the precedent for everything that was to follow, right up to the election of Obama earlier this year.

Now West Virginia is inviting tourists to celebrate the state's rich presidential heritage with the Washington Heritage Trail.

The trail includes stops at Charles Town, named after Washington's brother who inherited the land in 1780 as well as Berkley Springs, site of the infamous George Washington tub.

Tourists can also stop at the Harper's Ferry National Park in the Appalachians.

The West Virginia tourist board said: "For those who appreciate history lessons, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park identifies six themes called the "Paths Through History" which weaves a comprehensive history of the town for visitors."

Washington DC, which is easily accessible from West Virginia, was named after this early inspirational leader.
