A number of factors could cause travel insurance providers to refuse to take on an individual's custom, the Guardian has claimed.

The newspaper has suggested that how old a person is could play a part in whether an insurer is willing to sell a policy.

Stuart Castledine, managing director at Intune, said that older people are perceived by some firms to be more likely to submit a claim.

"Customers over 85 are eight times more likely to make a travel insurance claim than customers 35 and under - and those over 65 are three times more likely," he told the publication.

Other factors which might rule out a consumer from an insurance policy include illness, the risk involved in the destination and partaking in adventure activities.

The latter point could be particularly pertinent to those going on holiday in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el Sheikh. As well as luxury hotels, the destination boasts great amenities for diving and quad-biking.
