2008 News Archive - Holidays - Winter sun 'better' for tourism hotspots

05 11 2008

Many holidaymakers are finding that summer hotspots are "far more pleasant in the off season", according to a recent Newsweek article.

Winter sun holidays could become increasingly popular, in part due to crowds of tourists in summer making holidays in hotspots such as Dubrovnik, Majorca or Menorca seem more expensive but feel less exclusive.

Majorca is marketing itself not only for its fantastic beaches, but for its rich cultural heritage as well.

According to Newsweek Palma de Majorca has more art galleries per capita than any other Mediterranean city.

John Lennon, professor of tourism at Glasgow University, told the magazine: "It's all about selling the benefits like it being less crowded, easier to move around and actually getting to see the architecture."

The new approach to sunny holidays appears to be working, as Travelweekly recently reported that sales of winter sun holidays are up on last year, despite the economic downturn.
