travel news - Dubai Welcomes 6.3 Million Hotel Guests
Dubai welcomes 6.3 million hotel guests
January 15 2007
Dubai welcomed an astonishing 6.3 million tourists to its hotels and apartments in 2006, representing an increase of 228 per cent since 1996.
According to the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), the number of hotel establishments increased by 42 per cent in this period, as Dubai cemented its reputation as one of the world's most popular destinations.
Part of Dubai's appeal has stemmed from its reputation as one of the world's most important financial centres and business tourism has certainly played a part in boosting the number of hotel guests.
But Dubai is also ideal for the average holidaymaker looking for a week or two lounging on the beaches and enjoying the outstanding climate.
For those with a little more energy, Dubai also boasts some spectacular golf courses, including one designed by Ryder Cup legend Colin Montgomerie. Midday golfing can often be a little uncomfortable in the heat, but morning and evening rounds are hugely popular with visitors to Dubai.
Tourists can also enjoy a little exercise without straying far from their beachside accommodation, with scuba diving, yachting, windsurfing and jet-skiing all available from the beach resorts.
