Big year ahead for Mauritius
February 26 2007
The Indian Ocean island of Mauritius will reportedly welcome 850,000 tourists this year, after an increase of 7.8 per cent.
According to afrol News, Mauritius will generate €828 million from tourism during the course of 2007, reflecting the island's escalating popularity with overseas visitors.
Citing figures from the Mauritian Central Statistics Office, afrol indicates that 90 per cent of those who visited this beautiful island in 2006 came on holiday.
Interestingly, the number of visitors arriving from the UK increased by 7.3 per cent last year, which compares to a 17.3 per cent decline in the number of French tourists. The number of holidaymakers arriving from Italy rose by 59.7 per cent.
Tourism in Mauritius has certainly become big business in recent years and the infrastructure is now well established.
The island boasts 98 hotels in all, with 10,666 rooms and 21,403 beds. Many of the island's hotels are luxury five-star establishments and a large number overlook the spectacular white beaches.
