Blossoming Crete attracts curious Brits

The majestic Greek island of Crete is now proving exceptionally popular with property buyers, many of whom like the idea of retiring to the sun.

A new report from the Homebuyer Show argues that property prices on the island have increased by 15 per cent year-on-year. Despite this, houses in Crete remain relatively cheap, much like the living costs in general.

According to the Homebuyer Show, year-round sun, unspoilt beaches and the dramatic coastline are all making Crete extremely popular with property buyers.

"Situated in the middle of the Mediterranean, Europe's most southern island offers one of the best climates on the continent with 300 days of sunshine every year," said Susan Peters from Cybarco, which will be exhibiting at the upcoming show.

"The island has much to offer from quiet mountain villages, long sandy beaches, rocky bays and an abundance of flora and fauna," she added.

The western town of Chania is proving particularly popular with property buyers, according to the new report.

A stroll through this town will give you "a real taste of Cretan life", thanks to the winding streets, quaint harbour and ancient monuments. Enticing restaurants and bars also add to the appeal of this town, making it a similarly popular choice with holidaymakers.
