Santa Semanta to dazzle tourists in Spain
March 14 2007
Those travelling to the Andalucia region of Spain this Easter break may be swept up in the celebrations of Santa Semanta (Holy Week).
In Seville, Santa Semanta is considered one of the city's two biggest festivals alongside the Feria de Abril (April Fair) and sees most of its residents flooding out into the streets to join the festivities.
The festival comprises spectacular floats from each parish being carried around the streets displaying religious artwork, with thousands of people lining the streets to watch.
Other Seville attractions include flamenco-dancing and bull-fighting, as well as monuments to visit such as the Cathedral where visitors can climb the 90-metre high Giralda, the minaret of the former Mosque.
The Alcazar, which offers an introduction to Moorish art, is also worth a visit.
Additionally, art fans can attend the Fine Arts Museum, while budding historians can visit the Archive of the Indies, where the historical records of the American continent can be found.
