Key West: A tradition of relaxation
March 23 2007
Key West has been providing a sunny sanctuary to weary tourists and travellers for decades and though certain aspects of the Florida town are changing, its essence remains the same.
Located on the southern most tip of Florida, Key West has perhaps the most ideal weather of any city in the United States, boasting year-round sun.
Ernest Hemingway, Robert Frost, Tennessee Williams, Harry Truman and Homer Winslow all called Key West home when it was just a small seaside town, before the rest of American found it.
Now Key West is recognised as one of the most idyllic settings in the contiguous United States.
Seattle Times feature writer Lucy Mohl describes the town: "Lazy evening air, lush private gardens scented with jasmine, the splash from a pool; turn the corner and it's a smash of cover bands, motorcycles, open bars and cigar smoke on the main street, Duval."
Key West is also a major stopping off point for cruise ships, with the towns population being periodically swollen and then drained by the ship-borne hordes.
