China climbs tourism rankings
March 30 2007
China has climbed the ladder in the World Tourism Organisation's rankings from fifth to fourth place, it has been announced.
Over five per cent of China's GDP is now garnered from tourism and China itself takes up 5.5 per cent of world's tourism industry.
Many infrastructure initiatives, especially in the transport sector, have been boosted by the rise in tourism.
Investments in the tourism sector in China in 2006 were approximately $100 billion (£49 billion), according to The World Travel and Tourism Council.
The chief executive of Abacus International, Don Birch, said: "As China's push for a more open economy continues, the rest of Asia will begin to experience many of the same benefits and pressures that make Chinese travel such a remarkable story."
China boasts some of the most vibrant and dynamic cities in the world, including Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Macau.
In addition it also has beautiful landscape features like the Gobi Desert and the Yangtze River.
