Morocco's Rose Festival a treat for the senses

The beautiful Dades Valley in Morocco is also known as the Valley of the Roses, due to its miles of rose plants.

And there is no better time for visitors to see the valley than from May 14th to the 27th when the local farmers congregate to celebrate the harvest.

The festival takes place in the town of El Kelaa des M'Gouna, the centre of Morocco's lucrative rose-water industry and the location of a distilling plant that produces the precious substance.

To make even a few litres of rose-water ten tons of petals from the beautiful flowers are needed.

The Rose Festival features a lot of music, dancing, food and of course roses. A Rose Queen is elected at the beginning of the festival to preside over the partying.

Visitors to the festival should make sure to visit El Kelaa's famous souk to find deals on everything from intricate pottery to beautiful fabrics.

Morocco has a Mediterranean climate and beautiful landscapes.
