Prepare for Crete's biggest carnival

Undoubtedly the biggest carnival on the island of Crete is the Rethymno Carnival, which takes place in March 2008.

Rethymno Town is one of the most beautiful spots on the island and during the festival becomes a dynamic hub of celebration.

Lasting three whole weeks, the carnival features treasure hunts and a celebration of graffiti, to which artists from all over Greece come to.

Theatre events, dancing and fancy dress shows are also part of this flashy, energetic, hectic event.

But it is the Grand Parade that is the real centrepiece of this festival, when the townspeople parade up and down the streets wearing flamboyant masks and pushing extravagant floats.

Crete is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe and with its beautiful scenery and long beaches it is not hard to see why.

The historical port of Heraklion especially should not be missed, with its lovely boats and captivating stonework.
