Jazz in Jo'burg
June 13 2007
Lovers of jazz and sunshine may want to head over to Johannesburg this August for the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival, South Africa's premier jazz event.
The festival has become a much-loved event in the world of jazz and this year's version is set to be the best of them all.
Last year the likes of Jamie Cullum, Themba Mkize, Avishai Cohen, Branford Marsalis and the great Ramsey Lewis all attended, which is a clue to the kind of quality usually on display at this event.
Located in the eastern plateau area of South Africa, called the highveld, Johannesburg usually enjoys a dry and sunny climate.
In the 1990s Johannesburg had a major crime problem and was known as one of the most dangerous cities in the world.
However, since that time, the economy of the city has stabilised and crime rates have dropped substantially.
Now Johannesburg is becoming a prime tourist attraction and this summer will no doubt see visitors in their droves sampling the city's delights.
