Get a taste of Arabia in the Algarve
June 18 2007
Go the idyllic village of Cacela Velha in the Algarve during July and you may be forgiven for thinking you have stepped into a scene from Arabian Nights.
During this time, the village celebrates the Arabic presence in the region from the 10th to the 13th centuries by creating an Arabic ambiance.
There will be a traditional souk market, selling everything and anything, as well as traditional Arabic music and dancing.
Additionally, Arab treats such as harina a traditional soup and pastilha de frango com amendoas, which is a chicken and almond pastry, will be available.
Of course there will also be gallons of refreshing green tea and mounds of fresh fruit on offer.
If you miss this celebration of the Algarve's Arab influences, no worries, because the area has lots to offer.
Known for its vibrant nightlife, the Algarve first became popular around the 1960s, when Brits started flooding there for their holidays.
