Feast of St Peter and St Paul approaches
June 25 2007
The Feast of St Peter and St Paul in Rome on June 29th is one of the Italian capital's most treasured holidays.
In churches throughout the ancient city, services are held to honour the two apostles, two of the most beloved figures in the bible.
St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican and San Paulo fuori le Mura will be the two focal points of the day.
This celebration is one of the most ancient in Christian history, predating Christmas and purportedly celebrating the martyrdom of both men in 67 CE.
However, it is thought that the date was originally that of the festival which celebrated the two founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus.
In the legend of Rome's founding, Romulus and Remus were raised by a wolf. Later Romulus killed his brother and founded the eternal city.
Today Rome is one of Europe's most beautiful cities and combines modernism and energy with its historical past and many ancient ruins.
