Abta: Book ahead to beat the rush

September 12 2007

Forward thinking travellers are planning their long-awaited getaway out of the UK as much as a year in advance, an expert has said.

Brits eager to leave the country over Christmas are particularly organised, as this busy time of year can be short-lived by many and holidaymakers keen to make the most of their time off may book holidays 12 months beforehand.

A spokesperson for the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta), which represents 6,000 travel agencies and 850 tour operations, has said the festive period differs from high summers as there are particular peak times that passengers scramble for.

The spokesperson remarked: "People do tend to plan ahead because it's so busy and it's such a short period of time."

According to Abta, each Christmas season sets a new record for the amount of holidays taken by Britons, indicating a rise in the popularity of soaking up some winter sun while celebrating this festive occasion.

Last week, behavioural and personality psychologist Donna Dawson remarked that booking next year's holidays early can help alleviate post-holiday blues.
