travel news - SA Is Cherry Nice
SA is cherry nice
September 20 2007
Cherries may not be the cheapest fruit available to buy in Britain, but in South Africa it's a different story.
The juicy fruit is the subject of a festival in the country this autumn, which celebrates this seemingly unassuming sweet and tasty delight.
Held between November 15th and 17th, the festival has been attracting fruit fans for 40 years as the first celebration took place in 1967.
Ficksburg is the location of the event, as it is the centre of the cherry picking industry in the area.
According to the organisers, every hectare of cherry trees in the Eastern Free State can yield ten tonnes of crop.
A popular event with the locals as it helps boost the local economy, 24,000 people are estimated to descend on Ficksburg for the occasion with two lucky cherry lovers being named as Mr Cherry Pip and Miss Cherry Blossom, Whatsonwhen reports.
South Africa has a great many sites for visitors to see, including Table Mountain.
