Next month, holidaymakers visiting Croatia will be able to take part in an age-old celebration in the city of Dubrovnik.

The four-day event organised by the City of Dubrovnik and the Dubrovnik Tourist Board is one of the country's biggest carnival events.

International Dubrovnik Carnival 2008 begins with an official opening ceremony which sees local schools and children's organisations as well as other various associations taking part.

Dubrovnik is situated on the Adriatic Sea on Croatia's south most coast and it is one of the region's most important tourist destinations.

Revellers dress up for the carnival, sporting "garish costumes" according to What's on When, while music provided by trumpets and drums forms the backdrop to the festivities.

Expect to see jousting competitions on horseback and many other authentic regional activities.
