New York invests in water feature
January 16 2008
The City of New York has invested in a set of four waterfalls, which are to be displayed on its waterfront in a new project that starts in July.
Created by Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson and arranged by the city and the Public Art Fund - New York's "leading presenter of artists' projects, new commissions and exhibitions in public spaces" - the waterfalls will measure between 90 and 120 feet in height.
The series of sculptures will pump water from the river in a non-environmentally damaging way - and will decorate the waterfront for a period of three months, between July and October 2008.
"Throughout history we have always taken water for granted. Now people can engage in the physical nature of something as epic as a waterfall," the artist told the New York Times.
Around $50 million (£25 million) is expected to be generated through the project.
