Kenya tourism looks ahead

Following political upheaval and widespread violence, The Nation reported that tourist arrivals in Kenya dropped by 90 per cent in January 2008.

This comes in light of the fact that Kenya Tourism Board had targeted for 1.1 million visitors in 2008 - roughly 100,000 tourists a month.

And now the country is looking ahead to how its tourism sector can be rebuilt as former United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan attempts to hammer out a peace deal between opposing factions.

"The news from Kenya is more and more encouraging everyday and we welcome the recent news that the talks between the Kenya government, the opposition party and Kofi Annan have taken huge steps forward," Kenya Tourist Board UK sales and marketing director Angie Meddins recently told Travel Weekly.

Ms Meddins added that Kenya depends "heavily" on tourism.

It is hoped that the outcome of the talks will help increase the flow of tourists to Kenya.
