The picturesque Moorish village of Alcantarilha is perfect for those who want to get away from it all during their package holiday to Portugal. Alcantarilha is right in the middle of the southern region and is a perfectly-placed base from which to explore the rest of the Algarve. Close by is the popular tourist centre of Portimao where you can get a genuine taste of Portuguese life alongside a great selection of superb seafood restaurants and chic boutiques. The often overlooked capital of the region, Faro, is a bus ride away to the west. The crumbling medieval walls frame an old town with orange-tree-lined streets, lots of museums and stunning churches including the must-see Igreja do Carmo. A cheap holiday to Portugal has something for everyone.
