The resort of Alvor is ideal for those who want to stay in a lovely relaxing, low-key location during their package holiday to Portugal. Less developed than other areas in the Algarve it offers the best of both worlds, allowing you to enjoy the tranquillity of the resort while giving you the option of vibrant towns and a plethora of attractions close by. Once a sleepy fishing village, it lies 3km west of buzzing port Portimao, 7.5km east of historic Lagos and 25km west of the picturesque, provincial capital, Faro.

You won’t be short of sunbathing space or room for a beach ball and Frisbee on the wide, quiet beach where conditions are perfect for paddling and safe for children. The beach is even supervised during the summer months. If you get bored lounging in the sun there are water sports on offer and two beach-front restaurants where you can enjoy a cool cocktail and a replenishing snack.  If you want to get involved in busier beach life then the infamous resort of Praia da Rocha is close at hand.

Nightlife in Alvor is relatively sparse but there are several bars open late and even a disco if you want to party into the early hours. Relentless revellers would do better to head down to Portimao where there are night spots to cater for every taste.
