The enchanting inland village of Lagoa is something of a hidden gem for lovers of all things Portuguese.
A charming jumble of whitewashed houses clustered around a lovely church, it's ideally placed away from the busy tourist meccas yet still close to gorgeous beaches. After you've discovered its altar-dotted lanes, decorative doorways, wine-tasting cellars and little restaurants, there's little else to do here apart from relax into the unhurried lifestyle. When you fancy some sand and surf, a string of unspoilt beaches and coves awaits on the nearby coast, including the idyllic bay and boat trips of Carvoeiro, a charming resort with smart restaurants, shops and a fantastic market. Inland too, there's much to enjoy, from outstanding golf courses and a picturesque monastery to the beautiful village of Porches, famed for its pottery-making.
