Pedras da Rainha Introduction
The Pedras da Rainha complex sits in the small, pretty resort of Cabanas which is located around 5 kms from the larger town of Tavira. It offers simple, traditional Algarve style accommodation and the studios and apartments benefit from sitting amidst extensive garden areas with an abundance of shrubs, colourful trailing flowers and trees heavy with almonds, oranges and figs. At the heart of this established complex sits a large pool with a separate one for the younger family members. Next to the pool area is a pool bar plus a restaurant with more substantial offerings for evening meals. The resort of Cabanas is a world away from the larger resorts further along the Algarve coast. It has a handful of little shops, a bank, supermarket and some nice local restaurants serving freshly caught fish and Algarve dishes such as Cataplana (pork and clams). One of the highlights of staying here is taking one of the little water taxis across the Ria Formosa lagoon to the beach (which is on a small island facing Cabanas) or during high season the complex operates its own free boat across the water. If you want to explore further a field then perhaps let the train take the strain as there is a small station close to Cabanas from where you can either head to the east or west of the Algarve and stop off at many of the major towns.
