Bodrum was all I hoped it would be and more! From my first glimpse of the 16th century castle which takes pride of place in the bay, I knew that this was going to be a holiday to remember!
Home to one of the ancient wonders of the world - the Tomb of King Mausolus - Bodrum is now a bustling Turkish town with a plethora of shops specializing in goods such as leather and gold. Throughout the region you'll find many typically Turkish products and experiences to enjoy - Turkish baths, Turkish delight, Tea houses, mosques and the ruined amphitheatre are just a few of the treats on offer here.
The Greek Island of Kos is clearly visible across the water, yet culturally you are a million miles away from Greece. The harbour area with its numerous yachts and traditional wooden gulets is beautiful and serene, is a great setting to while away the hours. Why not sample a Turkish coffee at one of the marina cafes, or even take a day trip to Kos if you have your passport to hand?
Bodrum is characterized by its low-rise buildings, which are mainly white in colour. The shops strike a perfect balance between tourist trinkets and the authentic Turkish products, the people are exceptionally friendly and the narrow winding streets are heaving with great bars and restaurants. The food here is relatively cheap but great quality - the lack of processed or frozen food makes for brilliant eating out. Don't miss the Turkish mezes and excellent fish dishes!
Haggling in the markets takes some getting used to, but is an art well worth learning...there are some real bargains to be had. Bodrum is busy and lively, but you'll feel totally safe exploring its streets.
The Bodrum Peninsula itself is scattered with many little towns including the resort of Gumbet, which is a popular choice with the young and lively. By day you can enjoy its clear, inviting sea and dark sandy beach, whilst the bars, shops, restaurants and late night entertainment become livelier after dark. The more upmarket resort of Turgutreis is well-liked by families and boasts an attractive modern marina, whilst Bitez is much quieter beach resort famous for its windy bay, making it the perfect mecca for surfers.
Add to this the excellent places to visit (including Ephesus, a long way but a must!), the cheap prices and the great weather...it really is paradise. I'd go back tomorrow!
