I have been to Turkey on holiday numerous times and have even worked there and I would say that the traditional gulet cruise is the best way to see this beautiful part of the world.

I did a cruise and stay holiday, and whilst on the gulet I travelled from Antalya to Gocek over a period of a week. It was staggeringly beautiful: the coastline is peppered with lush forests, impressive mountains, secluded bays and beaches and fascinating ancient archaeological sites. The sea is crystal clear and ideal for swimming, snorkelling, fishing or just cooling off. The gullet had a mixture of ages, from young families to retired couples and we all got on well. I really enjoyed jumping off the boat into the sea, mesmerized by the volumes of fish beneath my feet; the sea is so clear the sea bed can be seen even at its deepest. I also loved relaxing on the top deck with a cooling breeze blowing in my face, but the best moment by far was when two dolphins swam alongside us, a moment that will stay with me forever.

I have travelled fairly extensively and the gulet cruise is one of my most memorable holidays. The wealth of ancient history was fascinating and to approach the numerous sites by sea, just as ancient travelers would have done, added to the whole experience. Another great benefit travelling by sea is the peace and relaxation you feel on board, something you can't get travelling by road.

Our guide was excellent and apart from having expert knowledge of the sites, he ensured everything ran smoothly so we were never hanging around. The sites themselves were hugely impressive. Termessos is a stunning ancient town high up in the mountains where the remains of its theatre lie cradled on an outcrop, offering majestic views. Lydai has a wonderful 'undiscovered' charm about it as a farmer still lives and works practically on top of the old agora! We also visited Myra, Andriake, Patara, Xanthos and Kas, all of which were fascinating. The balance between visiting sites and relaxing on and in the sea was just perfect.
