Once considered the Wild West of the Emirates, Ras Al Khaimah is a spellbinding place of natural beauty and rich traditions. In English, Ras Al Khaimah means “The Top of the Tent”, reflecting the country’s position on the shore of the Persian Gulf.  The city is split in two, divided by the Khor Ras Al Khaimah waterway. The west side is the Old Town where you'll find the museum, housed in a restored fort. The eastern area is known as Al Nakheel and is the commercial district. This Emirate, one of the smallest of the seven that make up the UAE, has been a thriving port for thousands of years. It also offers excellent beaches and spectacular mountains. Ras Al Khamiah is not known as a big nightlife destination, although there’s some available, so would suit families and couples wanting a slightly more relaxed holiday than in neighbouring Dubai. If you are lucky to visit during the annual Awafi festival, the city does come a little more alive.
