LA OLIVA

Standing inland on the edge of a lava flow amidst a windmill-dotted countryside and rugged landscape in the northern part of Fuerteventura, La Oliva has a sleepy atmosphere that's perfect to return to after busy days out. Perfectly situated for expeditions into the awe-inspiring landscape of the dramatic Montana arena – a mountain of sand La Oliva offers a surprising number of sightseeing opportunities. In the centre, there's a local district town hall (Ayuntamiento) surrounded by palm trees along with a sunny, flower-filled plaza and streets offering a few traditional bars and restaurants serving delicious Canarian dishes. Other focal points is the main church – a pretty building dedicated to the ‘Virgen de la Candelaria’, dominating the town, the large bell tower can be seen for miles. Make time to visit the ‘Casa de los Coroneles’ (House of the Colonels) where the military used to live and the ‘Museo Casa del Grano’ a small museum which traces the history of the famous Fuerteventura windmills, or strike out into the surrounding landscapes to walk, play golf, horse-ride or enjoy the stunning beaches including the unspolit beaches of El Cotillo tucked into the local shoreline - just a short drive away. La Oliva is also home to possibly one of the islands’ finest art galleries exhibiting well known Canarian artists and the works of Alberto Manrique. Otherwise, head for nearby Corralejo to enjoy its gorgeous golden beach and great selection of lively bars, cafes and discos - perfect for exciting nights out. La Oliva is ideal for a relaxed holiday.
