Surfing and windsurfing

Surfing and windsurfing, FUERTEVENTURA, CANARY ISLANDS

Windsurfers and surfers flock to Fuerteventura all year round, so if want to learn either sport or brush up on your skills, you're in the perfect place. The conditions and climate are ideal for both pursuits, with warm, clear seas, brisk Atlantic winds, and expert tuition and equipment hire available from the top-class schools in the main resorts. The best places for windsurfing novices and experts are Corralejo and the Jandia peninsula, the latter being the site of the annual world windsurfing championships; whilst surfers of all abilities can choose from the many excellent beaches. The waves can get quite strong in some places, so it's important to get proper tuition if you're a beginner.

Golfing

Golfing, FUERTEVENTURA, CANARY ISLANDS

If you're keen to get in some golf during your holiday, Fuerteventura has a superb course at Costa Caleta. The 18-hole, 70-par course is delightfully lush with green fairways, swaying palm trees and challenging water hazard lakes connected by narrow brooks, all offering delightful views out over the sea. Specially landscaped to counter the breezes that can come in from the Atlantic, its greens and fairways have been designed to be extra large and wide, and there's a number of easier holes for players wanting to compete below par. Buggies, trolleys and clubs are available for hire and there's a free bus service to the course running regularly from the centre of Caleta. Look out for our golf symbols at selected hotels.

Los Lobos Island

Los Lobos Island, FUERTEVENTURA, CANARY ISLANDS

To head out on a boat trip and visit Los Lobos island is a fabulous way to relax and enjoy some inspiring natural sights. Located off the coast of Corralejo, from where the excursions depart, this tiny volcano-tipped island is a nature reserve and completely uninhabited, giving it a wonderfully wild and tranquil atmosphere. Named after the seals - Lobos means sea wolves, that once lived here, it's now home to rare sea birds that nest in its cliffs, as well as unique plants and impressive scenery. You can follow the little network of paths to enjoy everything it offers, but mostly, it's just a great way to get away from it all. Why not take a picnic!
