Begin your cruise in Budapest and journey overnight to Osijek, with an optional excursion to explore the Upper Town, taking in the views of the Church of St Peter and the 18th century fortress. An option to tour the charms of Belgrade, located at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers. Enjoy a Serbian Folklore evening on board and after a free afternoon in the Serbian capital. Arrive in the Romanian town of Orsova, and then cruise through the dramatically narrow Iron Gates to pass between the Carpathian and Balkan Mountains. Journey to Novi Sad, the Serbian town with a long history, then pass into Hungary and finally back to Budapest, with the panoramic view over the Danube.
Fly to Budapest where you will be met and transferred to your cruise ship for embarkation.
Cruise overnight and arrive in the early morning in Mohacs to comply with custom formalities. Arriving at Osijek mid afternoon, there is the opportunity to join an optional excursion to visit the Upper Town. Here the Church of St Peter and St Paul has often been mistaken for a Cathedral because of it's size and imposing appearance. The tour then goes to the old town and to the 18th century fortress that offers magnificent panoramic views over the Danube and then on to the main square to see the Holy Trinity Monument. Arriving back on board in time for dinner, the cruise continues towards Belgrade.
This morning there is an optional excursion to explore the charms of Belgrade. Located at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers. From the fortress of Kalemegan, there are spectacular views of the Danube. This afternoon there is free time to explore the Serbian capital. After dinner there is a Serbian Folklore evening to enjoy. Note: The cruise company provide an optional coach transfer (bookable and payable on board) to and from the town centre.
Arrive in the Romanian town of Orsova this morning and join an optional excursion to the spa town of Hercules followed by Orsova town. Drive to Baile Herculane spa town, taking the scenic route through the Cerna River valley. Enjoy time at leisure in one of the oldest thermal spas in Europe and, legend claims, the site where Hercules defeated the Medusa and where after bathing in the thermal spring waters, he saw his powers increase. Next, continue to Orsova to visit the Cathedral, unusually decorated in water colours by the artist Gabriel Popa. Back on board for lunch at Orsova, cruise through the dramatically narrow Iron Gates pass between the Carpathian and Balkan Mountains. Look out for the Trajan Tablet, an enormous marble memorial plaque erected to commemorate the completion of Trajan's military road. An elegant viaduct towers over the river at the point where it starts to widen again and you can see a striking, rock-carved portrait of the face of King Decebalus in the cliff.
The Serbian town of Novi Sad has a long history and today's optional excursion includes visits to the Orthodox Monastery at Krusedol, created in the 16th century and then on to the peaceful town of Sremski Karlovci on the banks of the Danube. Arriving in Novi Sad, this is the multi ethnic capital of Vojvodina and the second most populous city in Serbia. Back on board the cruise continues to Ilok and there is a full afternoon's optional excursion that combines visits to Ilok and Vukovar. Rejoin the ship at Vukovar, where the Danube and River Vuka meet, in time for dinner.
Arriving in Mohacs, pass through customs into Hungary. Pec is the destination for today's optional excursion. Pec is situated at the foot of the Mecsek Mountains and is over 2000 years old. Back on board, the cruise continues to Kalocsa, arriving there late afternoon. This afternoon's optional excursion to Puszta and includes a traditional Hungarian horse show.
There is an optional excursion to discover the wonderful city of Budapest. The Danube cuts the city in two and divides it into two separate entities. Buda, with its hills and valleys and Pest, which lies on the Great Plain. The panoramic view over the Danube is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This afternoon there is the opportunity to explore the city further or join an optional excursion to Godollo Castle, the largest Baroque castle in Hungary. Tonight there is a last optional excursion of Budapest to admire the architecture beautifully illuminated at night.
