Day 2

Amsterdam

Included today: Canal cruise. Today, get a unique perspective of Amsterdam on an included canal cruise, floating along the elegant grachten, lined with stately homes dating back to Amsterdam's 'Golden Age'. There's free time in the city this afternoon, or you might like to join an optional excursion before bidding tot ziens (farewell) to Holland and set sail for Germany.

Day 3

Cologne

Included today: Choice of Guided walk or Jewish Heritage walk. Cologne is one of Germany's largest cities, with a river skyline dominated by the soaring twin spires of its magnificent Gothic cathedral. This afternoon, choose between an included guided City Walk or a Jewish Heritage walk. The Old Town offers up a great choice of cafés, shops and taverns so be sure to try a Kölsch in one of the many taverns and shop for a bottle of 4711, the original 'eau de cologne'.

Day 4

Rhine Gorge - Rüdesheim

Included today: Cruise through the Rhine Gorge; visit Siegfried's Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum. Sail the dramatic Rhine Gorge and pass the legendary Lorelei Rock, where it is thought the sweet songs of sirens lured enchanted sailors to their doom. In Rüdesheim, visit Siegfried's Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum and enjoy free time to explore the Drosselgasse where colourful flowers, open air wine gardens and live music add to the festive atmosphere.

Day 5

Main River Village

Included today: Guided walk. On the banks of the Main River you find cultural gems of small towns, many of them tucked away behind defensive walls and towered gates. Half timbered houses, narrow streets and medieval town centres, these picturesque Bavarian villages are a photographer's delight. Join your Local Guide to experience one of these towns on a guided walk.

Day 6

Würzburg

Included today: Guided sightseeing, visit the Bishop's Residenz. Surrounded by steep, verdant vineyards, Würzburg is known as the 'Pearl of the Romantic Road' and makes an immediate impression with views of its beautiful Marienberg Fortress and 15th century Old Main Bridge. Today's guided sightseeing tour visits the magnificent Bishop's Residenz, home to the largest ceiling fresco ever painted. Depart Würzburg at lunchtime and spend a leisurely afternoon cruising the Main River.

Day 7

Bamberg

Included today: Guided walk, see the Old Town Hall. Today arrive in medieval Bamberg, former residence of one of Germany's most powerful imperial dynasties and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your guided walking tour takes in its historic centre, including the great 13th-century Romanesque cathedral and the fascinating Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall)—built on an island in the middle of the Regnitz River when the bishop refused to give the townspeople land for a town hall! Wander the town's serpentine streets with their charming houses and 18th-century mansions.

Day 8

Nuremberg

Included today: Choice of guided sightseeing in Nuremberg or Roth or the Nuremberg Rally Grounds tour. Roth is a delightful Bavarian town with half - timbered houses and market square. It is also an industrial centre for textile manufacturing. Or you may prefer to choose a guided sightseeing tour of nearby Nuremberg. Although 90% of Nuremberg's Old Town suffered extensive damage during WWII, much of it has been restored to the glory it once knew as the unofficial capital of the Holy Roman Empire. Marvel at this thousand-year-old city's medieval fortifications, extraordinary Gothic churches and the Kaiserburg (Imperial Castle), or join a more specialised Nuremberg Rally Grounds tour.

Day 9

Regensburg

Included today: Guided walk; beer tasting Dating back to the time of the Celts around 500 BC, Regensburg is one of Germany's best preserved medieval cities. Established during the Holy Roman Empire and the only German city not bombed during World War II, Regensburg has at least 1,300 listed buildings of historic interest. Architectural highlights of your guided walk include the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall), built in the 13th century, and Porta Pretoria, gates to an ancient Roman fort built in 179 AD. Wander through the city's lanes and alleys to discover the many mansions with high towers. Wealthy families built these towers to emphasise their status and wealth during the Middle Ages. Walk across the 12th-century Steinerne Brücke (Stone Bridge), the oldest of its kind in Germany, then grab a beer and enjoy a snack at the Historische Wurstküche (Old Sausage Kitchen), one of Germany's oldest restaurants. Feel the vibrant atmosphere and take in the remarkable views along the river. Visit a violin makers workshop and learn how violins are made. Before dinner we'll introduce you to some of Germany's famous beers.

Day 10

Passau

Included today: Guided walk. Located where the Inn, Ilz, and Danube Rivers converge, Passau is a maze of narrow cobblestone streets lined with beautiful patrician houses. A full day excursion to Salzburg acquaints you with some of the sites of ‘The Sound of Music’, and you’ll visit Mozart’s birthplace. Lunch with musical entertainment is included.

Day 11

Melk - Dürnstein

Included today: Guided visit to Gottweig Abbey, cruise through the Wachau Valley, guided walk in Dürnstein, see the Stiftskirche. A day of magical scenery awaits you, as you cruise through the Wachau Valley, passing Melk Abbey.  Then head into the heart of the Wachau wine region to Dürnstein, known for its baroque blue Stiftskirche. A Local Guide will take you on a walking tour and tell you the tale of King Richard the Lionheart, who was imprisoned in the castle whose ruins still stand above the town. Later visit Gottweig Abbey , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, positioned high up overlooking the Danube.

Day 12

Vienna

Included today: Guided sightseeing. Vienna, known as the 'City of Music', inspired the creative genius of Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss. Once the centre of the mighty Habsburg Empire, Vienna is a showcase of gilded architecture. See the lavish Hofburg Imperial Palace with its Vienna Boys' Choir and dazzling Lipizzaner stallions, the impressive Vienna Opera House, the majestic Ring Boulevard and awe-inspiring St Stephen's Cathedral on a guided tour. Shop on the Kärntnerstrasse and enjoy Sachertorte or Apfelstrudel in a local café. Tonight, an optional concert is available. Tonight attend a ‘Royal Waltz’ concert in a spectacular location.

Day 13

Bratislava

Included today: Guided walk, visit St Martin's Cathedral. Situated at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia. Your guided walk with a Local Guide explores the charming Old Town with its winding cobbled streets, the old stone Town Hall and the gothic St Martin cathedral, coronation church for the kingdom of Hungary from the 16th to 19th centuries. The afternoon is free to explore on your own.

Day 14

Budapest

Included today: Guided sightseeing, see Fisherman's Bastion and Heroes Square. Cosmopolitan Budapest spans the banks of the Danube and is connected by seven bridges linking ancient Buda on the right bank with Pest on the left. Visit the beautiful Opera House and attend a short concert. The massive hilltop castle complex with Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church is among the impressive sights you'll see on your guided sightseeing tour, as well as Heroes Square. Shop for renowned peasant embroidery, Herend porcelain, and paprika. Alternatively, consider visiting St. Stephen's Basilica with marvellous views over the city, or stroll along the Vaci utca, the main shopping street.
