Admire the lakes, soaring peaks and chocolate-box villages of the Austrian Alps before discovering the beauty of Slovenia's Lake Bled and the delights of Vienna and Bratislava.
Fly to Vienna where you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Austria's elegant capital for one night. Enjoy dinner at your hotel this evening.
Today leave Vienna and travel into Austria's spectacular Salzkammergut region, famous for its beautiful lakes, storybook Alpine villages and snow-capped mountains. Admire the scenery as you travel first to Bad Ischl, a handsome spa town on the banks of the Traun River. Hear how Bad Ischl was a favourite holiday destination of 19th century Hapsburg Emperor Franz Joseph, who retreated here annually to an imperial villa, which he described as 'heaven on earth'. Take a tour of his Kaiservilla to view his private apartments and learn about the lives of one of Europe's most powerful ruling dynasties. Afterwards, travel farther into the Salzkammergut to the picture-postcard town of St Wolfgang, idyllically set on the shores of Lake Wolfgang at the base of Schafberg Mountain. Check in to your hotel for two nights.
Today is dedicated to St Wolfgang and its sparkling lake, two of the Salzkammergut's jewels. Enjoy a tour of the town with its medieval lanes, cobbled squares and fresco-painted Alpine houses. Visit the delightful church and see the White Horse Inn (Im Weissen Rössl), immortalised by an 1897 operetta that took the inn as its setting. Later, enjoy a wonderful cruise on Lake Wolfgang, revelling in the delightful setting and towns speckled along its banks. This evening, perhaps stroll around St Wolfgang's lively squares which often host brass band and classical music concerts, before dinner at your hotel.
Depart for the old salt-mining village of Hallstatt, spectacularly sandwiched between Lake Hallstatt and fjord-like mountains. Stop to admire the tiny village, whose pastel-painted houses seem glued to the mountainside. Explore the chocolate-box centre with a guide and visit its World Heritage Museum to chart Hallstatt's 7,000 year past, from its Iron Age beginnings to its salt-mining days. Afterwards, continue to the charming town of Velden, fringing Lake Wörth in southern Austria, for overnight.
Today cross the Austro-Slovenia border and travel to Lake Bled, Slovenia's scenic showpiece. Admire the towering Julian Alps en route and on arrival, take a guided tour of the gorgeous town and lake. Visit Bled Castle, the picturebook medieval castle perched high above the water and ride a 'pletna' double-oared boat to St Mary's Island in the lake, to visit its romantic church. Later, visit Bohinj, a postcard-worthy town on Slovenia's Lake Bohinj in the beautiful Triglav National Park. Breathe in the peaceful atmosphere of Bohinj, ride a cable car up Mount Vogel at 1,530 metres to enjoy bird's eye views of the lake, and visit the spectacular Savica Waterfall, which rushes 60 metres down cliffs into an emerald pool. Later, return to Bled for dinner and overnight.
Journey to Vienna and enjoy an afternoon sightseeing tour of the 'City of Music'. Admire the imperious architecture, grandiose monuments and wide boulevards, including the palace-lined Ringstrasse and learn how the city was once home to Mozart, Mahler and Strauss. Visit the splendid Hofburg Palace - the main residence of Emperor Franz Joseph - and Belvedere Palace before heading inside St Stephen's, the city's soaring Gothic cathedral.
Today, end your holiday with a memorable day trip to Bratislava, the charm-laden capital of Slovakia. Delve into this atmospheric, ancient city with a local guide, strolling around the quaint lanes, squares and pastel-coloured buildings of the old town, before visiting Bratislava Castle, the monumental fortress that looms above the city. This afternoon, cruise back to Vienna on a high-speed catamaran, gliding along the Danube River past untouched wetlands and forests back to Austria's capital.

The Tour was well planned to see the maximum in the time available. The Hotels were suitable and the Tour Guide was excellent and very patient with the 'slower' members of the Group when walking.
