Fly to Boston and transfer to your hotel. This evening meet your travelling companions and tour director for a welcome drink.
Dubbed the 'Cradle of Liberty' for its central role in the War of American Independence, visit the historic landmarks of Boston on a guided sightseeing tour. See Boston Common and Old North Church, where lanterns were hung to warn patriots of oncoming British forces. Other highlights include Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market and the Old State House. Afterwards, board a harbour cruise to see the USS Constitution and Bunker Hill Monument. The rest of the day is at leisure.
Land, or arrive, at Plymouth, where the Pilgrim Fathers landed more than 390 years ago. Site of the first permanent settlement in New England; visit the Plimoth Plantation and learn about how daily life was for the Pilgrims. At Flax Pond Farm, a working cranberry bog, you’ll learn how cranberries are harvested and processed. In Hyannis Port, there’s the former home of President John F. Kennedy – known as the ‘Kennedy Compound’. Visit the fallen president’s memorial and St. Francis Xavier Church. The next four nights will be at the Red Jacket Beach resort. Later, enjoy traditional Lobster Bake dinner—a delicious end to the day!
This morning, head to the harbour for the ferry ride over to Nantucket – a late 18th-century New England seaport town of dune-fringed beaches and cedar-shingled buildings. Time for lunch; and a stroll around the marinas, shops and art galleries of Straight Wharf. A guided tour highlights the strong Quaker influence during the early days of settlement. Drive the narrow streets and admire charming Colonial-style houses and imposing mansions that reflect the prosperity of Nantucket's whaling era. Enjoy time at leisure and perhaps visit the Whaling Museum with its top-quality exhibitions and rooftop observation deck.
From Hyannis, drive the length of the peninsula's arm to Provincetown and Cape Cod National Seashore. At MacMillan Wharf, board a cruise boat and head out to sea for a whale watching expedition, narrated by a local marine biologist. Later, enjoy free time to wander through "P-town," a lively summer resort and artist's colony. Return to Hyannis, where the remainder of the day is at leisure. Dinner this evening is at a local restaurant.
After a morning ferry ride to Martha's Vineyard, enjoy a tour that features Oak Bluffs with its Victorian "gingerbread" architecture overlooking Nantucket Sound. Spend some time in Edgartown, once an important shipping and whaling centre, where you’ll find the Whaling Church, a large 18th century church, now converted to a performing arts centre. Stroll down Water Street, along the harbour, with its "Captain's Homes" which line both sides of the street and peruse the charming village stores.
Head to New Bedford on Buzzard's Bay and explore its cobblestone streets and wharves with all the sights and scenes of this former whaling port, of Moby Dick fame. Look out for the early 19th century Seamen's Bethel Chapel. Journey south to Newport, an elegant yachting mecca on Narragansett Bay in the "Ocean State" of Rhode Island. Enjoy an orientation tour of Newport, see the first State House and America's oldest synagogue. Afterwards, explore the extravagant lifestyle of a bygone era at The Breakers, the opulent mansion of shipping magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt. This evening, your tour director hosts a special farewell dinner.
