Welcome to Shanghai, China's largest city and centre of trade.
Sightseeing today includes a stroll through the Old Town and the beautiful Yu Yuan Gardens, a place of peace and tranquillity in this bustling city. Visit the Shanghai Museum, where superb antiquities and fine arts dating back 6,000 years are on display. Walk along the famous Bund with its colonial architecture, and explore the restored Xintiandi area with its unique 1920s-style Shikumen buildings. You will also visit a Silk Museum. In the evening, enjoy a cruise on the panoramic Huangpu River, where the historic Bund and the futuristic Pudong come face to face.
Today, fly to Xi'an, the former ancient capital. This evening, sample a traditional Shui Jiao dumpling meal, followed by a performance of tang dynasty dancing
One of the largest and wealthiest cities in the world when China dominated the silk trade, Xi'an today is an archaeological treasure trove. Sightseeing begins with the enormous tomb of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huangdi, accidentally discovered by local farmers in 1974. Marvel at the legion of Terracotta Warriors that has been guarding the burial site for 2,000 years. We also walk along the Ancient City Wall of Xi'an and visit a ceramic and lacquerware factory.
This morning, visit the lovely Little Wild Goose Pagoda before seeing the ancient artefacts at the Xi'an Museum. Transfer to the airport for your flight to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, known as the "Roof of the World" for its high altitude. Take the rest of the day to acclimate to the high altitude.
Start your touring today at the Jokhang Temple, a Buddhist temple with Indian and East Asian architecture styles. Next, walk the Barkhor Circuit, Lhasa's most famous pilgrim circuit. Then see the Sera Monastery, one of the Great Three Buddhist universities of Tibetan Buddhism
Visit the Potala Palace. Located on top of Marpo Ri (Red Mountain), the palace is the former Winter residence of the Dalai Lama, before his exile to India. This afternoon, visit the stunning summer residence of the Dalai Lama, home to some beautiful gardens. This evening, dine on delicious Yak Burgers, a local delicacy.
Today, fly to Beijing, the capital of China and the country's political, social, and historical hub. The rest of the day is at your leisure.
Sightseeing today includes a stroll through Tian'anmen Square past Chairman Mao's Mausoleum and to the treasure-filled Forbidden City, the largest and best-preserved collection of ancient buildings in China. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was home to emperors as well as the centre of politics. Also, visit the unique Temple Of Heaven and take a rickshaw ride through the hutongs. Your evening meal features the local delicacy: Peking duck.
The Great Wall of China once stretched 6,000 kilometres across China's barren northern terrain from the Bohai Sea to the Gobi Desert. Head north to a village where the Great Wall is well preserved and walk along the wall to enjoy sweeping vistas of this mammoth fortress. Stop at a Jade Museum before returning to Beijing to tour the exquisite Summer Palace, which was constructed as a place of rest and relaxation for ancient royal families, and today serves the same purpose for locals and tourists alike. Tonight, enjoy an amazing Chinese acrobat show.
Your tour ends today with breakfast this morning.
Transfer to the airport for your onward flight back to the UK.
A visa is required to travel on this tour. Please refer to www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice prior to departure for the latest requirements and how to apply.
