A classic American West experience: journey through the sandstone cliffs of the Navajo Nation and cruise down the Colorado River. Watch rolling clouds over Monument Valley and peer into the Grand Canyon. This is the land of old Westerns and red, gold desert sunsets.
Fly to Las Vegas where on arrival transfer to your hotel. This evening join your travelling companions and Tour Director for a welcome drink.
Leave Las Vegas and cross old Mojave gold-strike country, passing through Williams on historic Route 66 – home to its best-preserved stretch, with soda fountains, diners and colourful parade of classic automobiles along the Mother Road. Continue through Kaibab National Forest and arrive at Grand Canyon National Park - one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World. See this awesome natural spectacle up close and wander along its rim for views of the Colorado River below. Join a ranger-led programme or bask in the amber rays of the setting sun.
This morning join an optional ‘flightseeing’ excursion over the heart of the Grand Canyon; and later, head north to Lake Powell for a leisurely cruise and the opportunity to photograph the distinctive scenes created by the sharply eroded canyon walls.
A day to explore this popular resort town, which straddles the border of Utah and Arizona, at your own leisure. There is an optional float trip excursion on the Colorado River through Glen Canyon, winding through towering red walls of the canyon; and a ‘flightseeing’ trip over Lake Powell, including famous Rainbow Bridge and National Parks Foundation Glen Canyon Dam.
Head into Navajo country to secluded Goulding's Lodge in the heart of Monument Valley, with its towering sandstone buttes - location of numerous old Western films. On arrival, cool off with a dip in the pool and admire the Western sky above, or perhaps explore the Goulding's Museum and Trading Post - home to a wonderful collection of movie memorabilia and Indian artefacts. Enjoy an evening Navajo Cookout.
In the cool hours of morning, set out with a Navajo guide in a comfortable 4-wheel drive vehicle to explore Monument Valley and its towering sandstone pinnacles – this most familiar of American landscapes from the movies! Later this morning, continue north to the resort town of Moab for a relaxing two night stay at Red Cliffs Lodge on the Colorado River. Visit the resort’s winery for Wine Tasting followed by dinner.
Home to more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches, visit Arches National Park to see the world-famous Delicate Arch in this impressive “high desert” landscape with elevations ranging from 4,085 to 5,653 ft. Continue on to the magnificent Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park. The remainder of the day is at leisure.
A day of rich contrasts today at Bryce Canyon National Park. The slow erosion of ages has created fantastically sculptured rock formations resembling castle towers and cathedral spires. The natural amphitheatres and canyons glow from different lighting throughout the day.
After a leisurely morning, descend into half-mile-deep Zion National Park - "Zion" means a place of peace and refuge. Enjoy the colourful sandstone walls that rise thousands of feet above the lush greenery of the canyon floor.
Continue to the bright lights of Las Vegas for a stay at Treasure Island in the heart of the famous Strip. Enjoy a farewell dinner this evening hosted by your tour director.
