Start the day by driving to the magnificently located old town of Cuenca, which stands high above the Rivers Jucar and Huecar and is famous for the "hanging houses" which are suspended over the ravine. Journey on to Valencia, home of the national dish paella, for a city tour with local guide n included city sightseeing including the visit of the City of Arts and Science, one of the 12 “treasures of Spain”
Head to nearby Castellón for a visit to Peñiscola Castle, built by the Knights Templar in the 14th century. Continue your journey through orange groves and seaside resorts past Tarragona to Catalonia's lively and beautiful capital, Barcelona.
Your sightseeing tour with a local guide features a drive around Monjuïc to see the Olympic Stadium and panoramic views of the port and city below, before heading into the city centre. Here you will have time to admire the greatness and eccentricity of Gaudi's architectural masterpieces in the Houses Batllò and Mila and the Sagrada Familia (entrance fees not included). The afternoon is at leisure or you may wish to take an optional excursion to Montserrat.
First stop today is in Collioure, a picturesque village and one of the most painted locations in France and home of the Fauvism artistic movement, nestled on the rocky Mediterranean coastline and sheltered by the Pyrenees. Later, head to France's oldest city, Marseille, where you will enjoy an included dinner in a local restaurant.
Capital of Provence, Marseille was founded by the Greeks in 600BC and is packed with fascinating sights. Your orientation will take you to the city's bustling ancient heart - the picturesque Vieux Port, where elegant markets and handsome townhouses surround the harbour. Then, head for the hilltop Basilica Notre Dame de la Garde for a visit and stunning views of the city. This afternoon, follow the coast toward Cassis, a small fishing port, en route to the French Riviera.
Spend the day in the famously beautiful city of Nice. You may like to join the included trip to Eze, to visit the amazing perfume workshop. This is a unique experience that treats all the senses, see the processes involved with creating perfume and discover what a 'Nez' is. Enjoy free time in the afternoon, either at the glorious beaches, walking along the fabulous promenade or visiting the variety of museums and shops.
Enjoy the wonderful coastal scenery along the French and Italian Riviera as you travel towards the Cinque Terre. Break your coach journey by taking a short train ride through the spectacular Cinque Terre region, stopping to admire the beauty of the rugged cliffs and romantic fishing villages once inspired Lord Byron. Continue to the Cinque Terre area for an overnight stay.
Travel through the Po river plain to the romantic city of Verona, where you'll have time to wander at leisure, perhaps seeing Juliet's balcony of Shakespearean heritage. Continue to Venice for two nights.
Venice is a visual wonder, with its criss-crossing canals, gondolas, water buses, arched bridges, palaces and piazzas. Your included orientation starts with a boat ride along one of the main canals to St Mark’s Square, where you will enjoy time to visit at leisure and a chance to watch Venetian Glassblowers at work. Don't miss out on the optional Gondola trip, gliding along the canals with a local troubadour to serenade you.
Today you'll have an interesting drive across the Po Delta stopping in Assisi, a city enclosed by ramparts and little changed since the Middle Ages. This is the town of St Francis where you will see the Basilica, boasting the most famous frescos by Giotto.
The "Eternal City," Rome is a city steeped in history, vibrantly alive, exciting and unique. Your included sightseeing with a local guide starts with St Peter's Square and Basilica, followed by an optional visit to the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel. Later, enjoy an included visit to the Roman Forum and iconic Colosseum. You will have time to continue exploring Rome at your own pace.
