Roman ruins, grand monasteries and historic quarters compete for your attention on this journey through the charming towns and cities of Portugal. Stroll the grand plazas and narrow cobbled streets of Lisbon and sip Porto’s famous local wine.
Fly to Lisbon, where you will be met by your representative and transferred to your hotel.
Start getting acquainted with the capital of Portugal on the included city sightseeing tour. The local guide will tell you about the historical events and the present way of life in this beautiful city, rich in architecture stretching from Romanesque to Post-modern styles. Discover the elegant Praca do Comercio, where the Royal Palace used to be located before the earthquake in 1755; see the Belem tower, the Geronimo’s Monastery and the Monument of the Discoveries, both heritage of a strong colonial past. Spend the remainder of the day exploring on your own, taking a ride on the number 28 tram, walking through the narrow alleyways of the Alfama quarter, or taking a trip to Cascais on the Atlantic coast.
A full day at leisure to further explore the city. Consider an optional excursion to Evora, a delightful city located inland that exudes Portuguese charm and boasts a vast array of fascinating historical monuments, such as the Sèe Cathedral, the Roman temple of Diana and the acqueduct
Bid farewell to Lisbon and travel north to Obidos. This is one of the most picturesque towns of Portugal. The compact town centre is filled with cobbled streets and traditional painted houses, while the entire town is encircled by the solid city walls. Obidos was traditionally owned by the queen of Portugal and this has ensured that every house or shop has been lovingly cared for and maintained. Carry on to the Roman archaeological site of Conimbriga, one of the richest sites in Portugal. Try and imagine life in 2 A.D., when the town was under the ruling of Emperor Augustus, who ordered the construction of the public baths and the forum. Upon arrival in Coimbra, a local guide will welcome you and walk you through the old cobbled streets to see the University that was founded in the 13th century and is now under listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Visit the Cathedral, one of the finest Romanesque Portuguese buildings and if you have time stop at one of the historical cafes of the town centre.
It is only a short drive to Oporto, built on the banks of the Douro river. The local guide will give you an insight of the city famous for its distinct Port wine, with many celebrated cellars lining one side of the river. Oporto is an ancient port steeped in history and tradition. It is a highly atmospheric place that has become known for its monuments by renowned architects. After the city tour, enjoy some time walking the old town, or sipping a drink in one of the lively bars on the river bank. Pop into the central railway station St Bento to admire the incredible azulejos covering entire walls. A curious fact: did you know that Harry Potter was born in Oporto? Author J.K. Rowlings was teaching here when she created the main character of the saga.
Enjoy a relaxing morning at leisure, and if you wish, join an afternoon optional excursion to Guimaraes, a charming and historic city that makes for a fascinating trip from Porto. Guimaraes is regarded as the birth place of Portugal and this extensive history is reflected in the variety of national monuments and historic buildings found within the city, such as the Braganza Palace and the castle.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK.
