This morning board the high-speed ferry to beautiful Catalina Island - situated 22 miles from the coast of Southern California. Your island tour takes in some superb scenery and the chance to find out more about its colourful past. Keep an eye out for some of the island's most famous residents… bison! There will also be free time to further explore the island and stroll its palm-lined streets. Return later to Long Beach for dinner at a waterside restaurant.
This morning, travel along the stunning California coast to San Diego. Enjoy a city sightseeing tour featuring Old Town, Balboa Park, Gaslamp Quarter and Cabrillo National Monument. The tour ends in Coronada, home to attractive beaches and elegant mansions. Lunch is at Hotel Del Coronado, San Diego's legendary seaside resort. Return to San Diego on a scenic ferry ride.
Enjoy time at leisure exploring San Diego. Perhaps visit the world famous San Diego Zoo, relive some military history on the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier or spend time at Mission Beach.
Today head into the interior of California, stopping in historic Temecula to sample some of the region's best wines at a local vineyard. Continue to the desert resort of Palm Springs and take the Palm Springs 360 degree Aerial Tram to the top of Mount San Jacinto for impressive views of the valley below. On an orientation tour hear tales of the town's famous celebrity residents, past and present, and learn about its colourful past.
Explore the fascinating landscape of Joshua Tree National Park on an included excursion. The park contains more than 700,000 acres, two deserts, two ecosystems and a unique habitat of ancient Joshua trees. See the park on a Jeep Tour and learn about the area's rich history, as well as the geology, flora and fauna of the California desert. Return later to Palm Springs, where the rest of the day is at leisure.
From Palm Springs continue to Barstow on the famous Route 66. There is an included visit to the Route 66 Museum, home to vintage cars, signs, photos and other memorabilia. Continue to Death Valley National Park, the hottest place on earth and the driest, lowest place in North America.
Today is spent exploring the wonders of Death Valley. Visit Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America (282 ft below sea level) and home to a surreal landscape of vast salt flats. At Stovepipe Wells, witness the ripples and patterns of its epic sand dunes that rise 100 ft above the Mesquite Flat. After a BBQ dinner this evening, enjoy a stargazing session with a local expert. Due to its vast area and absence of man-made light, Death Valley National Park is the world's largest International Dark Sky Park and one of the best places to star gaze. As daylight fades turn your gaze to the heavens to see planets, stars and constellations shine into view.
En route this morning stop at Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, a desert oasis with a rare and unique ecosystem. The refuge is home to nearly 30 species of plants and animals that don’t exist anywhere else in the world. Walk along the boardwalks and learn about the early pioneers, gunslingers and the mysterious Devils Hole. Arrive in Las Vegas and this evening the tour director hosts a farewell dinner.
Transfer to the airport for your flight to the UK or extend your stay in Las Vegas.
