Today travel to picturesque Monterey, made famous by John Steinbeck's novel 'Cannery Row', named after the old sardine canning factories. Your sightseeing tour includes visits to historic Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row; and then the afternoon to explore Alvarado Street, home to the Alvarado Street Brewery; Monterey Bay Aquarium; and a wealth of restaurants and shops in Old Monterey. Keep an eye out for sea lions and otters in Monterey Bay.

Monterey - Carmel - Solvang

Take the impressive 17-Mile Drive and soak up the ocean rolling in on the wide Pacific beaches en route to Carmel, the popular retreat for artists and celebrities – where actor-director Clint Eastwood was once mayor. Pick up the Old Spanish Mission Trail to Solvang, the Danish Capital of America, where Danish settlers travelled west to start a colony away from the harsh midwestern winters. Here European village meets Californian sun, in an unusual and unique mix of old-world architecture, windmills and thatched roofs. Wander its flower-lined streets and sample the wares of its pancake houses.

Drive over the Santa Ynez Mountains to Santa Barbara, a handsome city of popular wineries, notable for its California Mission-style architecture, red-tiled roofs and lush subtropical climate. Before travelling to Los Angeles, there’s time to wander along the waterfront to the attractive Stearns Wharf; built in 1872, look out for brown pelicans perched on its end.

A full day to explore the 'City of Angels', home of star-studded Hollywood and glamorous Beverly Hills. Take a sightseeing tour of the world's 'Capital of Glamour', including a drive through Hollywood past the legendary TCL Chinese Theatre. The afternoon is at leisure.

Los Angeles - Palm Springs - Scottsdale

Head to Palm Springs with its distinctive wind farms, and abundance of swimming pools and golf courses. Cross the great Colorado River and drive through vast desert landscapes, viewing the spectacular giant saguaro cacti, before arriving in the mountain-ringed desert resort of Scottsdale in the late afternoon.

Scottsdale - Sedona - Grand Canyon - Flagstaff

Canyon country is your next stop, home to Sedona known for its distinctive red rock landscape and lively arts scene. Then journey through the weather-sculpted rock formations of Oak Creek Canyon and Kaibab National Forest to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Designated one of the Natural Wonders of the World with good reason, the contrast of this cavernous canyon and its natural stillness can be an overwhelming experience when visiting this awesome spectacle. Why not take an optional helicopter 'flightseeing' excursion for a better view? Overnight along the famous Route 66 in Flagstaff.

Las Vegas offers a variety of spectacular attractions and activities for visitors of all ages. Enjoy two full days for relaxing at the hotel pool or exploring the 'Strip'. There's also a range of great-value excursions to choose from, including river rafting through the Black Canyon on the Colorado River, a visit to the Hoover Dam or in the evening a dazzling Las Vegas show.

Leave the neon lights of Las Vegas behind and continue across the eerie desert landscape of Nevada before crossing into California. Covering one fifth of the Golden State, the Mojave Desert is a place of immense beauty and isolation; your journey through it takes you to Tulare in the central San Joaquin Valley.

Enter Yosemite National Park, a wonderland of spectacular lakes, lush forests and giant granite domes and pinnacles rising more than 4,000 feet above the valley floor. Explore the Yosemite Valley or visit the Ansel Adams Gallery and see the works of this famous photographer who so beautifully captured Yosemite. Afterwards, drive to Modesto.

Continue on to the 'Golden Gate City' of San Francisco, famous for its hills, cable cars and iconic island prison. See the epic Golden Gate Bridge up close, Nob Hill, and lively Fisherman’s Wharf on a sightseeing tour.

The day is free for you to explore this fascinating city. Perhaps visit the famous and fascinating Alcatraz Prison. Get a close-up look at the infamous federal penitentiary that was off limits to the public for years. Afterwards the day is yours to do some more exploring. Ride San Francisco's historic cable cars or take a walking tour through the city's diverse neighbourhoods.

NOTE: Consider advance ticket purchase for the Alcatraz Island with the National Park Service.
